Cold to Hot and Your Equipment
With summer in full heated fury and the AC working hard to keep houses comfortable, we need to be careful with our photography equipment. I know from experience using a telescope that going from a hot or cold house to the opposite extreme will fog up the lens. The same is true with camera lenses.
Like I said, I know this. That didn’t keep me from walking from a nice comfortable 70 degree home out into 90+ degrees and suffocating humidity. I was perplexed as I looked through my lens into a foggy scene. At first I thought my autofocus was broken. I tried manual and that didn’t work. No mystery fog. Then of course, it hit me. I took my lens cap off without letting my camera heat up. The moisture in the air condensed onto the lens. A quick wipe of the lens got me back into business.
It’s always a good idea to let you equipment heat or cool down to match your environment. It keeps the lens from collecting moisture. I would have had a bigger mess if I had changed lenses outside. The mirror inside the camera will also fall victim to this as well.
Tip: Let your equipment cool/heat to match your environment. This keeps your camera equipment from fogging.
